Principal Control & Instrument Engineer 

The role involves working on large key projects, leading the design efforts, taking full responsibility the C&I activities, supporting the plants and the maintenance group, couching and mentoring engineers, utilising ATEX experience and taking responsibility for all aspect of control and instrument engineering. The candidate should fully be conversant with all aspects of instrumentation design.

As our Principal Control & Instrument Engineer, you will:
 

  • Control and supervise the work of engineers ensuring that resources are used productively.
  • Have an expert knowledge of all aspects of process instrumentation design including regulatory and safety control systems, measurement instrumentation, control valves, relief devices, and analyser systems.
  • Organise work to meet schedules, estimating proposal man-hours and capital costs, preparing project execution and control strategies.
  • Liaise with other engineering disciplines, vendors and peers and take the initiative in resolving C&I problems.
  • Control the C&I man-hours and equipment costs incurred, anticipating manpower requirements, and highlighting scope and design variations in accordance with Air Products procedures.
  • Make proposals for the preparation or modification of standards
  • Assist in DCS/PLC checkouts.
  • Supervise construction contractors, loop check and commissioning of Control systems.
  • Work with and train the Maintenance team to be more self-sufficient so that a clear escalation process is followed.
  • Utilise and capitalise on ATEX experience on projects to train and guide engineers.
  • Work with plant operating staff and the maintenance team to address C&I operational issues.
  • Support and develop a robust, reliable structure to collect information from all the remote out stations.
  • Lead in all aspects of C&I engineering in PI&D and HAZOP reviews.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of company engineering procedures, standards and specifications, including knowledge of Air Products EH&S system.
  • Assist peers on projects.
  • SME on Instruments design / specification.
  • Respond to any major occurrence of plant breakdown where C&I expertise is required.
  • Carry out prompt inspection, analyse the fault, repair and re-commission affected plant/equipment.
  • Carry out audits and advise of plant improvements in all aspects of C&I.
     
  • Your profile:
     

  • A Control & Instrument Engineer with strong design skills and who has field experienced with:A good track record in the specification, execution, and implementation of Instrumented systems.Practical onsite plant experience with a ‘hands-on’ approach, including experience in contractor supervision will be advantage.
  • A good level of technical expertise ideally suited to someone with an Engineering Degree (Chemical, Mechanical or Control & Instrumentation Engineering) with 15+ years relevant experience.
  • Discipline to work to a schedule and manage competing priorities.
  • Self-motivation with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to work productively, both unsupervised and as part of multi-discipline technical teams.
  • Flexibility to travel anywhere within the EMEA region to support projects for short durations, and to occasionally respond to plant problems outside working hours, with a willingness to travel at short notice.
  • English is required but additional language relevant to the EMEA region are advantageous. You can expect to work at times as part of international teams as well as at local level.
