Elsene (in het Frans: Ixelles) is een van de 19 tweetalige gemeentes die samen het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest vormen. De gemeente telt anno 2011 ruim 82.000 inwoners. Ze bevindt zich in het zuidoosten van Brussel en wordt in tweeën gedeeld door de Louizalaan, die behoort tot de stad Brussel. Elsene is daardoor samen met Baarle-Hertog, Mesen en Sint-Gillis (hier slechts een klein aantal percelen) een van de vier Belgische gemeenten waarvan het grondgebied uit meerdere, niet-aaneengrenzende delen bestaat.
Op het grondgebied van de gemeente liggen de hoofdcampus van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) ('Campus Etterbeek') en de Campus de la Plaine van de Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB).
