Automation Engineer

Job Purpose

The person has a pro-active role and accountability in driving first-line automation & robotics engineering support (software, technical & hardware expertise) with the primary objective of developing automated process and analytical methods relying on the usage of robotic systems (TECAN, Hamilton, AmbR).

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive TRD development transformation towards automated processes, establish new automation approaches, and collaborate with scientists to integrate manual procedures into automated workflows (e.g. TECAN, Hamilton and AmbR).
  • Lead automation development lifecycle from inception to potential industrialization, encompassing specification, design, architecture, and coordination with various stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with experts to understand operational needs, optimize software and hardware, and ensure design intent and cost-effectiveness, including liaising with suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Support team in Digital Twins development through active participation in brainstorming and prototyping sessions, while building and testing prototypes for feasibility.
  • Conduct design reviews, troubleshooting investigations, and provide machine troubleshooting support to end-users, ensuring efficiency and smooth workflow.
  • Integrate latest developments into current roadmap, establish technical documentation, training materials, and troubleshooting guides for newly automated processes.
  • Independently analyze and report data to technical and non-technical audiences, collaborating closely with cross-functional groups to address interdisciplinary challenges.
  • Contribute to product roadmap by exploring new design concepts and technologies, staying updated with automation advancements.
  • Develop performance and qualification procedures for automation platforms, define continuous improvement strategies, and provide introductory equipment training.
  • Maintain strong vendor relationships, stay abreast of Laboratory Automation developments, and facilitate knowledge sharing across automation SMEs within and outside GSK Technical R&D (QC, MS&T, CLS, Preclinical, Pharma)
  • Basic Qualifications

  • Degree in electro-mechanic engineering, process automation, robotics or related field.
  • Experience with automation platforms such as TECAN and/or Hamilton and or Siemens
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Min 3 years’ experience in lab instrument support or in process automation in the vaccines or biopharm industry or another industry is required.
  • Good understanding of biopharm / vaccine development process is a plus.
  • Expertise in Commissioning and Validation of automation system
  • Understanding of device networking and communications protocols
  • Experience writing protocols in Evoware & Venus software is a nice-to-have
  • Experience of installing & servicing large integrated systems
  • Experience in automation controller and process control - PLCs, Microcontroller, knowledge of GAMP 5 is a plus
