Design Engineer Radiation Protection and Characterization

Job Description

We are currently looking for a Design Engineer Radiation Protection and Characterization to support one of our clients on its Radiation Protection & Characterization projects in the Nuclear sector.

Our Clients "Radioactivity Management’ Competence Centre", is responsible for all Engineering aspects in the field of:

  • Radiation Protection;
  • Radiation Monitoring;
  • Radiological Characterization;
  • Radioactive Waste Management (both waste from operational and from dismantling activities);
  • Decommissioning Concepts (Dismantling Tools & Techniques, Conceptual Design Studies…).

The teams “Radiation Protection & Characterization” are in charge of Radiation Protection and Radiological Characterization Projects & Software and  Radiation Monitoring Projects for internal projects  as well as for other Clients. It provides high-level engineering and consultancy services. The team interacts with the other teams of the Competence Centre (CC), with the other CC’s and the other Products of the Belgium Nuclear. Its members work in close relationship with the final Client and interact with the Safety Authorities and the Belgian Waste Management Agency.

The ‘Design Engineer Radiation Protection & Characterization’ is responsible for a sound roll-out of all the projects, tasks and responsibilities entrusted to him. In close collaboration with the team and the team lead, he contributes to the preparation of bids, the Engineering Studies and the projects in the field of Radiation Protection & Characterization.

His main tasks and duties are:

  • Conducting Radiation Shielding calculations and ALARA follow-up of nuclear installations, this includes on-site interventions when needed;
  • Developing and applying strong capabilities with computer codes such as Microshield, MCNP and RayXpert;
  • Writing technical specifications, follow-up of orders and commission Radiation Monitoring systems;
  • Maintaining the knowledge, required expertise and methodologies required to accomplish the missions;
  • Delivering ‘quality on time’: in order to achieve this objective, the Design Engineer will get all support required in terms of technical training, coaching and availability of (IT) resources;
  • Verifying work performed by the colleagues in the team;
  • Correctly applying the Integrated Management System (IMS) procedures;
  • Providing regular feedback concerning ongoing activities to the team lead and the hierarchy, while working autonomously towards the goals defined for the Design Engineer;
  • Identifying and implementing possible synergies with other teams and/or Competence Centres;
  • Contributing to the preparation of technical bids;
  • Providing (internal) presentations and trainings;
  • Participating actively to regular meetings with the colleagues of the team during which workload, technical issues, project follow-up, development strategy and transversal activity coordination are discussed.

The Design Engineer will collaborate actively with the colleagues from Project Management and Competence Centre departments, and build a close relationship while working for the same goal, actively developing cross department projects for the clients.

Requirements

    • Masters degree or PhD in engineering or science, preferably in physics, with a strong technical background and a will to further develop your technical expertise.
    • Have the drive to become a technical expert in this field.
    • Be fluent in French or Dutch, and in English.
    • Draw up reports in French or Dutch, and in English.
    • Have experience (at least 3 years) in the nuclear industry and preferably in the field of radiation protection.
    • Be flexible and creative in finding technical solutions.
    • Be autonomous and like teamwork.
    • Be open to gain new competencies as well as to share them.
    • Be at ease with IT-tools and familiar with the MS-Office software suite, Visual Basic and Access.
