Junior System Engineer

The National Control Centre (NCC) is very much driven by the constantly evolving energy landscape (integration of renewable energy, decentralised production, advent of new market players, shutdown of central generation units, security of supply, etc.), shifting regulation (EU network codes, incentive regulation, strategic reserves, etc.) and the further integration of European electricity markets (e.g. flow-based market coupling, and new borders with Luxembourg/Germany and the UK) – with all this going on while we roll out highly ambitious investment plans (Brabo, Stevin, ALEGrO and Nemo, to name but a few).

The NCC is organised into the following departments so that it can adeptly handle this series of challenges:
• Energy Scheduling & Balancing
• Operational Planning
• Real-Time Grid Operations
• Emergencies, Projects and Processes
• Power System Operations & Security

As a near-real-time engineer you will be part of the Operational Planning Department, working alongside long-term planning engineers and planning & support.

More specifically, this position involves the following duties:

  • You will ensure forward-looking grid safety in near real time by performing the appropriate grid calculations and evaluating the relevant preventive and corrective measures. This includes factoring in financial impact and grid risks.
  • You will harness your expertise in PowerFactory (our grid simulation tool) to perform grid calculations and guarantee high-quality grid models at all times.
  • You will determine available day-ahead and intraday capacities at the borders and monitor market coupling.
  • You will monitor security of supply in Belgium and activate the strategic reserve, if necessary. You will work in close collaboration with long-term planning engineers by calculating various scenarios in the day-ahead grid calculations and/or by making decisions about conditional switching operations.
  • You will work in close collaboration with real-time engineers by regularly taking over a number of their duties (use of EMS) or determining remedial actions.
  • You will support and monitor emergency procedures in situations where the grid is under severe pressure (up to and including 'emergency state').
  • Your Profile

  • You are a qualified industrial or civil engineer, or the equivalent based on practical experience.
  • You have a solid knowledge of the Belgian and European electricity grid and are very familiar with current challenges in the energy world.
  • Experience in the electricity sector would be an advantage.
  • You can express yourself in Dutch, English and French.
  • You are willing to work in a 24/7 shift system (extra pay) .
  • You keep a cool head in stressful situations.
  • You can work in a team.
